At 10.10am (AEDT), the benchmark S&P/ASX200 index was up one point, or 0.02 per cent, at 4696.7 while the broader All Ordinaries added 2.1 points, or 0.04 per cent, to 4698.
The major miners were taking a breather.
BHP Billiton declined 16 cents to $37.65 and Rio Tinto was slightly ahead, up 15 cents to $60.90.
The big four banks were quiet, too.
ANZ gained 13 cents to $23.98, NAB added 9 cents to $30.11, Westpac advanced 19 cents to $25.70, and Commonwealth Bank fell 6 cents to $51.24.
In the US overnight, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 5.67 points, or 0.06 per cent, to 9725.58.
On the Sydney Futures Exchange, the December share price index contract declined 10 points to 4706, on a volume of 4838 contracts.
