Bill Champion been the managing director of Rio Tinto's diamond division since 2007 and will take up his new role at the coal miner on January 1.
Mr Champion has more than 30 years of operations management experience, including roles in North America, South America, and Europe with both open pit and underground operations.
He began his career with Rio Tinto in 2002 as the president and chief executive officer of Kennecott Utah Copper.
Mr Champion will be based in Brisbane.
