Dow plummets in early trade

THE Dow Jones Industrial Average fell sharply in early trades overnight, falling below the 11,000 point mark amid fears about the health of the eurozone.

Thirty minutes after the open the Dow fell 143.52 points (1.29 per cent) recouping some earlier losses to stand at 11,008.31.

The Nasdaq composite was up 52.12 points (2.09 per cent) to 2446.62 and the Standard & Poor's 500 index was down 17.95 points (1.49 per cent) to 1184.31.

The drop eroded yesterday's strong gains as investors fretted about the health of the eurozone.

"The stock market has come under a stiff bout of broad-based selling pressure that has put all 10 major sectors into the red," said Briefing.com analysts.

The euro approached the $US1.30 level and treasuries rose as investors looked for safer investments.
